Japanese Grammar: When to Use Particles に and で?

📍 Japanese Grammar: Understanding Japanese Particles: "Ni" vs. "De" for Locations

The hardest Japanese Grammar point, many people argue, is the use of particles.

One of the most common hurdles for Japanese learners is deciding which particle to use for a location. Should you use に (ni) or で (de)? Both can be translated as "at" or "in" in English, but they serve very different roles.

Here is a simple breakdown to help you choose correctly every time.

1. The Particle に (ni): Existence & Destination

Think of  as a pin on a map. It is used for "Static Existence" (something just being there) or "Direction" (where something is headed).

A. Existence (Static)

Used with verbs like います (iru) for living things or あります (aru) for inanimate objects.

  • Example: 公園猫がいます。

    • Kōen ni neko ga imasu.

    • There is a cat in the park.

B. Destination / Arrival

Used when you are moving toward a specific point and staying there.

  • Example: 日本来ました。

    • Nihon ni kimashita.

    • I came to Japan.

2. The Particle で (de): Action & Events

Think of  as a stage. It is used when an action takes place at a location. If someone is doing something (working, eating, studying), use .

A. Location of Action

Used with active verbs like 食べます (taberu), 勉強します (benkyō suru), or 買います (kau).

  • Example: 公園テニスをします。

    • Kōen de tenisu o shimasu.

    • I play tennis at the park.

B. Events / Occurrences

Used to indicate where an event (concert, party, meeting) happens.

  • Example: 教室テストがあります。

    • Kyōshitsu de tesuto ga aru.

    • There is a test (happening) in the classroom.

⚡ Quick Comparison: The Same Place, Different Particle

Observe how the meaning changes based on the particle:

  1. レストランにいます (Resutoran ni imasu)

    • I am at the restaurant. (Focus: My current location/existence)

  2. レストランで食べます (Resutoran de tabemu)

    • I eat at the restaurant. (Focus: The action of eating)

💡Tip: The "Camera" Rule

  • If your "mental camera" is zoomed out and just showing an object sitting in a spot, use .

  • If your "mental camera" is zoomed in and watching someone perform an action, use .
